JOINT MEDIA AND PUBLIC NOTICE BETWEEN UMNGENI-UTHUKELA AND THE ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY 23 JULY 2026 PLANNED WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION DUE TO ESSENTIAL MAINTENANCE AT DURBAN HEIGHTS WATER TREATMENT WORKS Residents and businesses supplied with water from the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works are advised of a planned 24-hour water supply on Friday, 24 July at 7am until Saturday, 25 July at 7 am. The interruption is due to essential maintenance work being by uMngeni-uThukela Water (UUW) at the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works. The planned shutdown forms part of a project to rehabilitate the elevated sections of Nagle Aqueducts 1 and 2. Nagle Aqueducts 1 and 2 are two large-diameter bulk water pipelines that form part of the raw water conveyance system supplying the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works, where water is treated and distributed throughout the city. A complete shutdown is therefore necessary to install an isolation valve on Aqueduct 2. This will provide a full seal, allowing contractors to safely complete the remaining work inside the pipeline. The shutdown will also enable the replacement of Sleeve Valve No. 2 at the Nagle Mushroom House. The original sleeve valve failed in March 2026, resulting in reduced water flow to the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works. Since its removal, the Nagle Aqueducts have been operating via a stop block, an arrangement that poses a significant operational risk. These critical works are necessary to improve the reliability and resilience of the bulk water supply system to the City. As a result of the planned shutdown, water supply to parts of the eThekwini Municipality will be interrupted for approximately 24 hours.
