[SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR POSSESSION OF ILLICIT CIGARETTES, BRIBERY AND CONTRAVENTION OF IMMIGRATION LAWS] Members of the Capricorn District Flying Squad arrested a 32-year-old suspect in the Moletlane policing area on Saturday, 12/09, for possession of suspected illicit cigarettes, bribery and contravention of immigration legislation. The members were conducting policing duties linked to an investigation in the Zebediela area when they received information about a shop owner who was allegedly involved in the sale of drugs and illicit cigarettes. The information was operationalised, and the members proceeded to the identified premises in the Moletlane policing area. Upon arrival, permission was obtained to search the premises. During the search, police discovered a plastic bag containing 19 cartons of Remington Gold cigarettes suspected to be illicit. It is further alleged that during the police intervention, the suspect attempted to bribe the members with R1 000. The members rejected the alleged bribe and proceeded with the investigation. The suspect was also requested to produce documentation confirming his legal status in the country but allegedly failed to do so. He was subsequently arrested and detained at Moletlane SAPS. He is facing charges of possession of suspected illicit cigarettes, bribery and contravention of the Immigration Act.
